Yesterday, the University of Iowa requested employees walk, bicycle, or take transit to their jobs to reduce the strain of traffic flow because of road closures in flooded areas. It is refreshing to see the bicycle as an option that could absorb part of the burden during emergency situations. We've already seen biking and walking used during evacuations in New York City and New Orleans. Once again, this strengthens our resolve for complete streets - creating feasible options for the community transportation system.
The flood has also taken it's toll at the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Monday afternoon, we evacuated most of the items from the IBC office at the Iowa River Landing. We soon hope to be moving to a new location in Coralville, so the timing is good. However, this puts a strain on our operations. Please bear with us as we are in transition, but most of all, consider helping us out by joining IBC. We need more members so we can work on increasing our advocacy across Iowa.
